April 27th, 1964: Rehearsing for the group’s TV special, Around the Beatles, at Redifussion’s Wembley studios. One of the highlights in the one-hour show was the boys’ fairly humorous reading of the tragic/comedic interlude from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Whatever the merits of including a passage from A Midsummer Night’s Dream in a pop review, the short interlude did offer some comic relief from the hectic action onstage. With John as a gloriously butch Thisbe and Paul, quite appropriate, cast as Pyramus, the love-struck male, the Beatles’ only venture into classic drama was remarkably proficient, the comedic aspects of the piece allowing them to capitalize on their natural inclination for a bit of fun. (George got the part of Moonshine and Ringo played Lion).
